Spring cleaning can feel like a big task but with the right spring cleaning schedules and a spring cleaning checklist, it is a doable and joyful experience, after all, who doesn’t love the fresh spring scent in the air? Before I jump into deep cleaning, scrubbing, and organizing, I like to get everything ready. Nothing is worse than starting a big cleaning day only to realize I’m out of cleaning spray or garbage bags. Here’s how I prep:

Gather Your Supplies

I grab all my essentials like:

All-purpose cleaner
Glass cleaner
Microfiber cloths
Sponges and scrub brushes
Garbage bags and recycling bins
Clean or do maintenance of Vacuum, mop, and broom so that they work well.

Have all together

Having everything in one place saves me from running around when I’m in the cleaning zone.

Dress for cleaning

Firstly I wear comfy clothes with short sleeves that will not interfere with cleaning. Secondly, I prefer old clothes that have already faded so in case of any spillage I don’t have to worry about them. Wear a head mask or put on a scarf, and slip on some cleaning gloves. Trust me, gloves make a huge difference when you’re scrubbing for hours.

Set a Realistic Timeline

Don’t try to clean the entire house in one day. Instead, I break it down into smaller tasks. Maybe I tackle the kitchen one day and the bathrooms the next. I do one day speed cleaning but that is more like a house reset not for spring cleaning. You can read about one day whole house cleaning

Meal prep

On the weekend before I start spring cleaning, I try to do some meal prep or get some instant cookable grocery items so that I do not have to worry about meals after cleaning. And I try to keep some healthy snacks ready to replenish energy.

Plan leaves

If you are working making time for spring cleaning is not easy. I try to keep some leaves a buffer for such situation and plan to use them by combining them with a weekend to get good staring non work days to get cleaning done.

1. Prioritize the Messiest Areas

Start with the room that stresses you the most. For me, it’s the kitchen—crumbs in drawers, sticky spots on the counters…you know it. Knocking out the toughest room first makes everything else feel easier.

I clean one room at a time to see progress quickly. This keeps me motivated because I can step back and admire my work when I’m done.

3. Involve the Family

I’ve learned to let go of perfection and involve my kid. They can handle simple tasks like dusting or sorting toys while I tackle bigger jobs. It’s not about doing everything perfectly—it’s about working together.

Each house is different and each room of every house is different. So, you cannot have a one-size-fits-all checklist for your home. That is why I like to create my own based on my house, my needs, and the need for cleaning. But having a general idea or a reference point to make a cleaning checklist is a good start. Here’s a breakdown of how I clean each room. I’ve created a detailed spring cleaning checklist you can use too, the checklist allows you to customize it and make it your own.

Here is a general list for the most frequent rooms.

Living Room Spring cleaning

  • Dust shelves, tables, and the TV stand
  • Wipe remotes and light switches
  • Vacuum under the couch cushions (you’ll be amazed—and horrified—at what you find)
  • Wash throw blankets and cushion covers
  • Clean windows and blinds

Kitchen

  • Wipe down countertops, cabinets, and appliances
  • Clean out the fridge (goodbye expired leftovers)
  • Scrub the sink and faucet
  • Organize the pantry—goodbye, stale snacks!
  • Empty and wipe down the trash can

Bedrooms

  • Change bed sheets and pillowcases
  • Dust furniture and lamps
  • Organize closets (this is where my decluttering tips come in handy)
  • Vacuum the floors and under the bed

Bathrooms

  • Scrub the sink, toilet, and shower

Decluttering can be tough—especially when you’re attached to things or don’t know where to start. Here’s what works for me:

  1. Start Small – Begin with one drawer or shelf. It feels good to finish something quickly.
  2. Set a Timer – Clean for 15-20 minutes. You’ll be surprised how much you can get done!
  3. Use Three Boxes – Label boxes Keep, Donate, and Trash. This makes sorting easy.
  4. One In, One Out Rule – If you buy something new, get rid of something old.
  5. Clear Countertops – Keep only what you use daily on the counters. Less clutter, more space!
  6. Tackle Closets First – Donate clothes that don’t fit or that you haven’t worn in a year.
  7. Sort Paper Clutter – Recycle old papers and keep important ones in labeled folders.
  8. Declutter Toys and Games – Donate toys your kids have outgrown or don’t play with anymore.
  9. Ask: “Do I Use This?” – If you haven’t used something in six months, you probably don’t need it.
  10. Finish One Space Before Moving On – Seeing a clean, clutter-free area will keep you motivated!

After decluttering, organizing becomes so much easier. Here’s how I keep things neat and tidy:

    I use bins, baskets, and hanging organizers to keep things in place. Vacuum-sealed bags work wonders for storing seasonal clothes.
  2. Label Everything
    Labeling bins, drawers, and containers helps everyone in the house know where things go. No more “Mom, where’s my…?” moments!
  3. Create a Drop Zone
    We have a small table near the front door where we drop keys, wallets, and backpacks. It keeps clutter from piling up on the kitchen counter.
